Depression Tips: Small Steps That Make a Big Difference

by | Feb 20, 2025

When depression hits, even the simplest tasks can feel impossible. You don’t need to fix everything all at once.Sometimes, the smallest actions can help you regain a sense of control and relief.

Here’s a list of real, effective ways to support yourself when you’re struggling:

Reset Your Body & Mind

Shower. Let the water run over you, hot or cold, however you like. If you can’t bring yourself to wash, just sit under the water and breathe. (Bonus: A warm Epsom salt bath + comedy show = instant relief.)

Moisturize everything. It doesn’t matter if it’s fancy lotion or a dollar-store find. Just the act of caring for your skin can be grounding.

Put on clean, comfortable clothes. Pick something that makes you feel good—yes, even the ridiculous boxers with jalapeños on the butt.

Stay hydrated. Drink water, use ice, or add lemon or mint for a boost. Body Armor has potassium and nutrients that help restore hydration and energy.

Shift Your Energy

Clean something—anything. One drawer, five dishes, a single load of laundry. Even a small task can break the cycle of stagnation.

Blast music. Play something upbeat and LOUD. Dance. Sing—badly, if needed. Movement helps shift emotional energy.

Make food for yourself like you would for someone who really needs you. Even if it’s just ramen, add something special to it—a soft-boiled egg, veggies, seasoning. The care you put into it matters.

Make something. Write, draw, sculpt, knit, fold origami—it doesn’t have to be good. Creativity shifts your focus and gives your brain a new outlet.

Reconnect with the World

Go outside. Sit in the grass, look at the sky, touch the dirt. Nature has a way of reminding us we’re part of something bigger.

Talk to someone. Call a friend, a family member, or even a hotline. If calling feels too hard, text, email, or just listen. Social interaction—no matter how small—can be a lifeline.

Cuddle your pets. Take pictures of them, tell them about your day, or visit a shelter and spend time with animals. Their unconditional love can be incredibly healing.

You Matter. Keep Holding On.

At your absolute best, you won’t be good enough for the wrong people. But at your worst, you’ll still be worth it to the right ones. Remember that.

If no one has told you today: I love you. You are worth your weight and then some in gold. Be kind to yourself. Keep pushing on.

Find something to be grateful for—anything.
